When you sit down at your desk with your writing paraphernalia and instruments (an act that takes on the mantle of a sacred ritual in the middle and far east), a very great pleasure takes place. Near to hand are pen, ink, paper, seal, and sealing wax, all carefully arranged and positioned with the utmost care for facile use. Agreeable music appropriate to the task at hand can be heard in the background. You are wearing comfortable clothing and sitting in an elegant and sturdy chair. Everything is ready to begin the most pleasant part of the day.

You are going to reach out and touch someone through the medium of the written word. And you are going to take your sweet time and enjoy yourself. And you are going to take joy in the sure knowledge that the recipient of your effort will enjoy the fruit of your labor as much as you did in the doing of it! A quick trip to the copier machine to give yourself a record of what you have written (and how pleasing to the eye it is!), and it’s down to the corner mailbox. Capital! Satisfactory! Life is good! How could it be any better?
