Triple Leo Seal

This seal depicts a “heater-shaped” shield, so called because of the resemblance to a flat iron. Earlier Gothic period shields were much taller and were called “kite-shaped.” The crest is a demi-lion rampant holding a thistle. A “demi-animal” is the top half of the animal, cut off at the waist. “Rampant” is the position or attitude of that animal. The shield is a chevron between in chief a lion passant, and in base a lion passant. “In chief” refers to the top half of a shield, “in base” refers to the bottom half of the shield. “Passant” means walking, and generally refers to a four-legged animal with one forepaw raised.

This seal is a jewelry-quality casting in bronze from the original seal, and the wood handle is turned in beautiful and incredibly durable black walnut, lightly finished. The original seal is an antique engraving in moss agate semi-precious stone from the Victorian Gothic revival period in the nineteenth century; when John Ruskin, William Morris, the Luddites, and the Arts & Crafts movement were all active.
