Dragon Crest with Wolves Seal This seal depicts a very detailed dragon’s head as a Crest atop its torse (wreath). The squarish, fancifully shaped rococo shield is of that period in time when men and women went about wearing powdered wigs and taking snuff while gathering in small groups to listen to chamber orchestras. Writing was done with specially cut, “dutched and clarified” turkey or goose quills. Men would wear several “fob” seals dangling from a chain across their elaborately tailored waistcoats (vests). It was the age of the “dandy” and London coffeehouses. The shield is “quartered” into two sections. In sinister (left side): a chevron between in chief (top) two gold roundels on a field of gules (red), and in base (bottom) one rounded on a field of gules. In dexter (right side): two wolves, one in chief, one in base, on a field of sable (black) divided by a bar containing a crescent, a Maltese Cross, and a crescent. Beneath the shield is a motto on a ribbon-like scroll: “Mediocria Firma” (In Moderation, Strength). This seal is a jewelry-quality casting in bronze from the original seal, and the wood handle is turned in beautiful and incredibly durable black walnut, lightly finished. The original fob seal is an antique from the Georgian period (eighteenth century), hand-engraved in carnelian agate, and mounted in an ornate pinchback setting.
